Case Study: Enhancing Teacher Training at Five Counties SCITT with Mosaic

Five Counties SCITT shares how Mosaic brings centre- and school-based training together, improves mentor engagement and reduces admin.

In this blog post, Sarah Goode, Primary Programme Lead at Five Counties SCITTreflects on how Mosaic supports programme oversight and mentor engagement across training delivery.

“The Five Counties SCITT, based in Bristol (formerly Cabot Learning Federation SCITT), currently has 120 trainees across Primary and Secondary programmes. We’ve been using Mosaic since 2022, and it’s become a key part of how we deliver training.”

“At Five Counties SCITT we aim to deliver exceptional teacher training which combines centre-based training with school-based practice. Before Mosaic, these two elements often ran in parallel rather than in sync, making it harder to keep everything consistent, track progress, and maintain strong quality assurance.”

Challenges

“Before Mosaic was introduced, Five Counties SCITT was navigating a set of challenges common to many SCITT providers delivering training across both centre- and school-based contexts.

  • The integration between centre-based training and school-based training relied on termly training plans sent via email to mentors
  • Tracking trainee progress and task completion took a lot of admin time.
  • Information was stored across multiple spreadsheets and documents stored on personal and central drives.
  • Collecting evidence for reviews and audits was slow and inconsistent, leaving gaps in quality assurance.”

What Mosaic Changed

“Since adopting Mosaic, everything feels more connected. It has enabled us to:

  • Track trainee progress and completion of tasks and activities (Reflections, Weekly Training Plan, Activities, Review Points)
  • Support mentors to understand our programme and help trainees make links between theory and practice (Weekly Training Plan, Mentor Training Modules, Course Files) leading to improved integration between centre-based training and school-based training.
  • Monitor the quality of mentoring (Target setting/Lesson Observations)
  • Improve communication to mentors and trainees (Announcements)
  • Supports with data for reviews and audits (including Ofsted and Compliance)”

Impact/Outcomes

  • “Programme leaders now have instant access to trainee data and mentor engagement, helping us spot development needs early.
  • Integration between centre-based and school-based training is much stronger and supports trainee development. Mentors who work with other providers comment on how effective this integration is compared to other providers.
  • Trainees enjoy a more coherent experience, with feedback loops that connect theory to practice.
  • Mentor engagement has increased, thanks to better tools and communication.
  • Quality assurance is more robust, with consistent evidence collection and positive feedback from external auditors.
  • Admin workload has dropped significantly, freeing time for programme development.”

Next Steps

Integration with SHU PGCE

  •  “We have partnered with Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) to integrate the PGCE element of our programme within Mosaic. This collaboration has strengthened the trainee experience and improved mentors’ understanding of the academic component, ensuring a more coherent and connected training journey.”

AI-Powered Target Setting

  • “A group of our mentors has participated in beta testing Mosaic’s new AI functionality within the target-setting tab. We look forward to its full rollout across all cohorts.”

Placement Management

  • “We are eager to explore how Mosaic can support placement planning and management, reducing logistical headaches!”
